Brand reputation is of great importance to any business .This can be improved by making the Corporate Social Responsibility policy well known and practicable. Corporate Social Responsibility policy help in improving the management of risks this entails the use of corporate governance procedures whose one great component is such a policy. Internal and external relationships are also strengthened where a company has a practical Corporate Social Responsibility policy Corporate Social Responsibility Scandals A responsible organization recognizes the side-effects its activities which include its products, operations and or its services caused on the parties it covers in its policy. It is its responsibility therefore to contribute to the society it operates. It should carry on its activities appropriately as stipulated in the policy, actions of which should not only be over but also above the compliance with the minimum legal requirement. (Banerjee ,2007, p.43) A Corporate Social Responsibility policy scandal occurs when a company trashes its policy on the same or does not take the appropriate actions in response to a particular activity. BP for example, experienced a scandal that resulted from irresponsible behavior to an oil catastrophe resulting from an oil spill from an explosion at an offshore drill rig that brought its consumers to protest for the environment was at compromise. However sometimes something goes terribly wrong and the corporate social responsibility campaign fl ops before its very face, a company not in compliance with its corporate social responsibility policy signifies one treading down the path of failure at it. There is a growing public demand for organizations to take into account practicable corporate social responsibility when planning business operations that are socially responsible. This could result in: Financial burden in fines bad publicity, Long-term effects such as brand and reputation degradation. A multinational corporation can ensure that its CSR policy is not just a theoretical document, but rather a practical means of ensuring the future and safety of the communities in which they are working by the application of quite a few strategies that spawn from the design, the approach and the implementation of the corporate social responsibility policy. (Anderson, 1989, p.26). Approach The organization can use different approaches in the design o a corporate social responsibility policy that include: Philanthropy. This is especially the case where a multinational that is undertaking business in poor communities. It involves the running of running of projects that improve the lives of the locals. These include the running of water projects, building of schools and hospitals that directly benefit the locals by bringing essential services to the people this builds the communities relationship with the multinational and the businesses they engage in can go on very smoothly. (Mallin,2009, p.77) Majority of such CSR projects are undertaken in Africa, other examples being adult educational facilities and HIV/AIDS enlightening programs. This is the adoption of a principle of interdependence of social welfare and corporate success. The multinational needs an adept government, sustainable resources, and above all a healthy, skilled and educated workforce while on the other hand. A government on the other hand requires businesses such as multinationals to raise revenue from taxes and other charges. The society on the other hand needs thriving businesses that are profitable and also competitive to create income, philanthropy opportunities and tax revenues. (Banerjee, 2007, p.92) Design The design of a CSR policy should be guided by quite a number of aspects so as to ensure practicability in the policy. The principles that govern the design of the policy are as: The policy should respect human rights so as to avoid friction with the law and the community this is especially the case where the activities of the multinational could cause conflict with the communities. A case in point is the Niger Delta where the Royal Dutch Shell and Chevron Corporation faced or still face CSR crises for taking up land belonging to the Ogoni people after they were forced out by the government so they could drill crude. The CSR policy should be so designed to enhance human capital by creation of employment and encouraging their training and further education. The CSR policy should cover employees in a manner that no unfair, disciplinary or discriminatory measures are taken against them whenever they repor t to the management or other relevant authorities, in good faith, practices that encroach company policy or infringe the law. (Paetzold, 2010, p.45) The CSR policy should not make any demands for exemption from environmental, ecological or any social standards. These issues are bound to cause trouble for the company sooner or later, these are things that affect everyday lives of people around the company. The policy should uphold a disclosure of information policy that keeps constant CSR communication to the public this ids especially the case where the multinational is building face in a new location or venturing into a new businesses. This is best executed as follows: Regularly giving information about activities to be undertaken in the near future, the structures of the business and any anticipated or made changes, the financial situation of the company and the business results of the company. Care should however be taken as any misrepresentation of information whether i ntent or no can have really devastating impacts on the company. The corporation should ensure its employees are represented in trade unions so as to be compliant to be labor friendly. Employees and social partners are perhaps the trickiest game of balance and should be carefully considered. Child and forced labor should no even be an issue but since multinationals traverse the world it is important to uphold policies against forced and child labor. The policy should not encourage but ban any slight sign of discrimination. The corporation should encourage effective and widespread collective agreement with the respective stakeholders, this should be clearly appended to the policy. The companys management should ensure a vis-Atilde;Â  -vis relationship w ith the workers or their representatives, this improves the likeability of the corporation and the performance of the employees and therefore the companys profitability. The policy should lay down a policy to ensure recruitment of local personnel and their training wherever their skills fall short of the expected levels of qualification. Environment: There is a great revolution regarding the preservation o f the environment, any corporation that does not respect the environments bound down and hard. The company especially one engaging in environmentally sensitive business a case in point being the BP oil spill that elicited a lot of commotion and was declared a national disaster. The company should adopt an environmental management system this should best take care of the events such as those of the oil spill where the disaster could have averted or the effects mitigated. The multinational should in its policy play big brother and ensure therein provisions meant to raise awareness and provide the public and its employees and the public on the possible effects of its undertaking on the environment inclusive of health and safety. This can also be enhanced by having a policy that carries a drift on the worst case scenario and a crisis plan so as to avert damage afflicted to the environment and or health. Over and above all the multinational should train its employees continuously on matters that relate to the environment. Combating Corruption Corruption is a killer of customer social responsibility and could bring even a multinational to its knees. It should therefore be shunned since its potent is beyond imagination .A case in point is the Arthur Andersen that went down with Enron corporation, the partnership went down due to accounting fraud. To effect this corporate social responsibility policy should ensure that no payment is made to officials or to employees of business partners, management control systems that discourage the culture of bribery and any other forms of corruption should be adopted, this eliminates if not reducing the possibility of going down with the ship of corruption. The corporate social responsibility should also ensure that no illegal donations to any candidates contesting public office. This insures the company is ridded of dirty smears that could cause corporate social responsibility crises. Consumer interests The multinationals can improve their corporate social responsibility by improving their products so as to ensure the clients are satisfied with their products. Consumer interests should come to fore in corporate social responsibility since they are a major cause of corporate social responsibility flops. Ensuring the safety of products is key to a successful corporate social responsibility. If there is something that will jeopardize a multinationals reputation and its brands it has got to be the safety of its products. A case in point is in 1977 when the Ford Corporation in the production of Ford Pinto, faulty fuel tanks that gave in at the neck of the tank filler causing it to break off, puncturing the fuel tank and leading to deadly fires. This called for recalls that are always costly let alone the tainting of the brand. Toyota also recently had the same problem marked by brake faults in their vehicles. The corporation should also ensure there is preciseness and clarity in providing product information this eliminates the possibility of misunderstanding of their products hence protecting customer interests. The corporation should also ensure that they effectively handle complaints so as to protect customer interests. A desk should be dedicated for customer service. This ensures the corporation gets feedback on what it should or should not do. The policy should accommodate customers opinions as the are the reason for what they do. The multinational in a bid to ensure upright CSR should ensure that it does not engage in ant-competitive agreement that paint a bad image on it. This could cause aggression and negative publicity from owners of competing and perhaps smaller businesses that cause make the corporations operations disadvantaged. Conclusion. CSR policy is a key issue in the success of a multinational and should been taken into key considerations so as to ensure the products success in the market.

The college search 5 things parents must know

The following post was written by a friend and colleague whose son recently went through the college admissions process. I asked her to share her insights into the experience, and she was generous enough to write this post. So for all you parents of smart B students who would rather be playing World of Warcraft than writing their college essays, know that there is hope. Spoiler alert: the writers son got into college, no one had a nervous breakdown, everyone is still on speaking terms and, perhaps most importantly, no one will have to go into permanent debt to fund his education. Do you remember your own college search? Perhaps like me, your 17-year-old self probably got very little guidance from your parents. Did you take the SAT once or twice? I took it once. Did you get test prep? I didn’t. I was pretty passive about the whole thing. However, let me ask a question that is even more revealing of the difference in generations†¦ Did you use a typewriter to do your applications? Even if your 17-year-old self would have appreciated the convenience of the online Common App, I bet he or she would look at the high school senior standing in your living room and be totally aghast at all the sturm und drang. Of course, you could go all 1986 and let your own child follow in your footsteps – although finding a typewriter could be tough. But you know, and I know, that you cannot. Tuition is higher, competition is fiercer, and if your child picks the wrong school and ends up transferring, that could cost you another year’s worth of tuition. I don’t claim to have all the answers, but now that I have been through this ordeal, I can tell you what I have learned. According to self-help books, mistakes are opportunities to learn and grow; but in the college process mistakes will cost you, and these costs are colossally higher than they were in 1986. Below are some mistakes I avoided, and a few that I ran into head first. Rule #1: When it comes to test prep, timing is of the essence. Is your child an A student? Well, mine was not. Overall, he was a solid B student: weak in English and History, strong in Math and Science. So I knew that test prep was in our future. Luckily, I am a teacher, and I know wonderful people that I could consult. Probably the most important decision is between the ACT or the SAT. The clock is ticking my friends – you must choose and you must choose wisely. Prepping for both tests at the same time, and choosing between them is a waste of your child’s time and nerves. Choose the test that works to your child’s strengths, and choose early. It was clear from the start that the ACT was the right test from my son, and once he chose it, we never looked back. If you know that your child does not do well on standardized tests, you must start prepping on the early side, but not too early. Burnout is real. My son began with a baseline test the summer before junior year. I used a company called Bespoke, which offers a mock-testing service using previously administered tests. Do NOT sign up for the real test – your child will probably not be happy with the score, and you do not want it recorded officially. We got the baseline in August before he started junior year. I was prepared for his Verbal scores to be weak (although maybe not nearly that low), and for the Math to be close to acceptable – and the baseline confirmed it. I immediately hired a tutor who specialized in the ACT Verbal. The tutor was expensive, but I was prepared to pay the big (but not obscene) bucks to make a difference. However, for the Math I just got a graduate student from a local university to give him a little push for $20 an hour. A word about tutors: it is more important that the tutor click with your child than have an Ivy League pedigree. And sure enough, my son clicked with both of these tutors. Although he was a bit grumpy when I began scheduling these sessions, I was thrilled to see him come home in a good mood from having worked one-on-one with smart people who cared. The Verbal tutor not only helped him understand the exam (he gained 10 points in English), but more importantly taught him to be a stronger writer, which is so essential to making the jump from high school to college work. I am forever grateful to her for patching up the gaps in his education. As for the graduate student, he was an amazing role model – particularly for my son, who had been educated mainly among female teachers. He genuinely cared about my son, helped him improve his score and cheered him on. And now a caveat to those of you with A students – not that I wish you anything but the best. But I want to warn you about one other thing that has changed since 1986, and that thing is grade inflation. I am a teacher, so you are getting the inside scoop. Rubrics, class participation points, extra credit, and group presentations all allow students to get inflated grades. If your child has a low A, I would just assume it is a 1980’s B and take the necessary precautions. Better to know in advance that they will need prepping than be caught by surprise. Like I said before: timing is everything. Extra Time: the great divide between the rich and poor This was a hard one for both my son and me. My son felt it was a stigma. As for me, I have been conflicted. To some degree, I always felt that my son’s processing problems stemmed more from a society where video games were glamorized and books were not. Believe me, we had epic battles over gaming, and I know that the hours he spent gaming rather than reading took a toll. On the other hand, as a teacher, I saw how the wealthy got every advantage for their children – anxiety, processing problems, ADD, ADHD, basically whatever they could get a shrink to sign off on would get their child extra time. I also became astounded as more and more of my A students were given accommodations. My advice – if you think your child would profit from more time, and if you can afford the testing – do it and do it as early as you can. You have no idea how many kids are getting accommodations. Why not yours? Rule #2: Never assume your kid knows their way around a college website. I assumed my brooding son could not wait to get away from me, run away to college and be a computer science major. So, when I enthusiastically tried to get him to research colleges, I was astounded at how little research actually got done. After questioning him a bit, I realized that it was not laziness but an inability to adequately navigate a website. Let me repeat that – a future CS major who codes in three languages could not find the information he needed on a website. Most teenagers will click once on a website, and if they do not find the information they need will easily give up. I had to show him where to click to find the CS department, what classes were required for the major, where to find the class catalog, and what test scores were needed to qualify as a candidate. Do not assume that your child knows how to compare colleges or even what they should be looking for. Also, do not assume your over-worked school counselor has the time to help your child create an adeq uate list either. If you do not guide them, there will not be a coherent list of reaches, targets, and safeties. Rule #3: College visits make it come alive. Yes. Colleges like when you visit them – make sure you sign that guest list! It shows you are serious and they really do check. But these visits also help adolescents envision themselves there – especially one like my son who seemed to have no enthusiasm for the process, as well as a nagging suspicion that it would be just another annoying four years like high school. These visits also had a strange magic to them, and really helped hone his list. For example, my son visited both Boston University and Northeastern – which many people see as interchangeable on a college list. Yet he detested BU and loved Northeastern. Sometimes they have a visceral reaction to a place, and you must trust their instincts. No offense BU – it’s not you. It’s my son. Ok? Rule #4: Kicking their butt to think about college is fine, but sometimes they want a mom. I have to admit: my son’s passivity drove me insane. In fact, at one point he told me he was going to pick a college according to which one had the coolest mascot – just to taunt me. I pushed and pushed and talked about nothing else, and it started to drive a wedge between us. So, no matter how crazy it gets, don’t forget to be their mom and ask about other things – even something as plebian as their favorite tv shows. It makes them feel loved, and tells them that they are more to you than a college candidate. Rule #5: It is ok if they do not get their dream school. Really! It will be ok. Looking back at my 17-year-old self and her college process (if you could call it a process), it seemed so easy. Yes, I got into a great school. But I’ll be honest with you: today my alma mater is considered a near-Ivy, but back in the ‘80s it was not prestigious at all. In fact, my 17-year old self would probably not be admitted according to today’s criteria, and even if I were lucky enough to get in, I would not have gotten a scholarship. If I were admitted to that particular institution of higher learning today, my middle-class family would go bankrupt paying full boat – even adjusted for inflation. Should I feel sorry for my child that his process is so much more competitive? It is what it is. But this stressful, complicated process has also allowed me to watch my young son turn into a man. Mainly because the process is made up of teachable moments constructed for the long game – not for the test next week, but for the next four years. I had to force him to think about his future, be willing to work for it, and understand the financial implications that go hand-in-hand with his decisions. During one college visit, I witnessed this abrupt growth in maturity very acutely. After the Computer Science department gave their spiel, I suddenly saw him shake off the yoke of passivity and take the initiative. Without saying a word, he walked over to a professor, shook his hand and asked pointed questions about the program. From my vantage point on the other side of the room, I could see the professor smiling at him while my son spoke earnestly – he actually seemed charmed by my morose son! My eyes welled up with tears – big sloppy tears. What a change from the rising junior who initially pouted about ACT prep. Now he will be attending this very same university where I watched him morph from a duckling to a swan. However, it was far from his first choice. In fact, he was terribly disappointed to be denied by his reach school – a reach school that ten years ago he could have easily qualified for. But of all his acceptances, this private university offered him the best scholarship – in fact, it would be cheaper than going to a prestigious public university from out of state. Although I would have done anything to make my son’s dream school a reality, I had to stop and count my blessings. We were paying half the full tuition, my son would get small classes and close relationships with his professors, and the school is very much an up-and-comer (just like my alma mater was all those years ago). In fact, when I think about that swan-like moment with the CS professor, I realize just what an excellent omen it was. Next thing you know, we bought him the school’s t-shirt and little by little he started to envision himself there. So, despite this nerve wracking process, sometimes it just all works out in the end. And chances are it’ll work out just fine for you too.

Until the 1960s and 70s, it was widespread belief that those with the best diploma – the ones with the highest IQ – were destined for success. The world was understandably confused when this belief was shaken by incredibly successful entrepreneurs such as Ray Kroc, Warren Buffet, and Sam Walton who started from humble beginnings and had a poor education yet grew to be some of the richest men the world has ever seen. Patrick Lencioni, author of The Five Dysfunctions of a Team, wrote â€Å"Not education. Not experience. Not knowledge or intellectual horsepower. None of these serve as an adequate predictor as to why one person succeeds and another doesn’t. There is something else going on that society doesn’t seem to account for.†1 It sparked the question, â€Å"how could they be so successful while some of those graduating with the highest honors from the greatest universities would never make a name for themselves?† Is IQ all it is made out to be? In reality, emotional intelligence is more critical to someone’s success than IQ.The term â€Å"emotional intelligence† seems to first appear in a paper by Michael Beldoch in 1964. A few years later in 1983, the idea of multiple intelligences was introduced by Howard Gardner. This theory revolved around the idea that a human had more forms of intelligence than IQ. This theory included both intrapersonal intellig ence, which is, in other words, self-awareness and interpersonal intelligence, which is the ability to understand other individuals’ motives, interests, and desires. However, the idea that IQ was not the dominant intelligence didn’t gain traction until Daniel Goleman published his book Emotional Intelligence – Why it can matter more than IQ in 1995. His book was a New York Times Best Seller for over a year and a half and is given credit for spreading this new found understanding of how we as humans work. Since then, more in-depth findings have been discovered and many more books have been written on these findings. Dr. Travis Bradberry, an intellect on the topic, argues in his book, Emotional Intelligence 2.0, that human behavior is made up of three main elements; IQ, EQ, and Personality. IQ is your capability or ability to learn and unless a traumatic brain injury occurs, it is fixed from birth. Because of this, your IQ typically will not change throughout your life and therefore you have very little influence over it. Personality defines the â€Å"way† you approach life and whether you are extroverted or introverted. Like IQ, personality is also relatively fixed, with most traits lasting your entire life. Many incorrectly believe that those with an extroverted personality have a higher EQ than introverts. This is not the case as EQ doesn’t influence what settings (alone or in a social group) you need to be in to â€Å"recharge†. In contrast, emotional intellige nce is the awareness of your emotions. Unlike the other three elements that make up human behavior, it is a skill that can be learned and improved. According to Dr. Bradberry, Emotional Intelligence is made up of four skills, split into two competences.Self-AwarenessSelf-awareness is â€Å"your ability to accurately perceive your own emotions in the moment and understand your tendencies across situations.†2 Increased self-awareness lessens the chance you might lose control of your emotions, or as Daniel Goleman put it in his book Emotional Intelligence; Why it can matter more than IQ, â€Å"those moments of impassioned action that we later regret, once the dust has settled.†3 Greater self-awareness also allows for a better understanding of what motivates you. Oedipus the King was the son of King Laius and Queen Jocasta, but because of a Prophecy that Laius would be killed by his son, he was ordered to be bound and left on the mountain to die by his parents a few days after his birth. Instead the shepherd who was given the duty gave the newborn to a shepherd from a nearby kingdom to rear as his own. That shepherd instead, gave him to Polybus, the King of Corinth who, unable to produce children of his own, raised Oedipus as his son. Years later Oedipus unknowingly killed Laius, and then solved the riddle of the Sphinx, becoming the King of Thebes and winning the hand of Jocasta (his birth mother) in marriage. Several years later, when told of his deeds, Jocasta hanged herself and Oedipus tore his eyes out. Art Appreciation Art cannot be classified into one category, style, or period. Art is very diverse, ranging from the beginning of the human being to today. Through the years, art has evolved dramatically from stick figures and two dimensional animals to three dimensional sculptures and intricate paintings. The artwork featured at the Seattle Art Museum shows many different types of art and features several different periods in which these artworks were created. Two pieces of art that stuck out the most at the museum was Albert Bierstadt’s Puget Sound on the Pacific Coast and Robert Arneson’s Pool with Splash. Both of these pieces of art showed character and seemed to almost speak to the viewer. The â€Å"water† of the pool, is made up of many different pieces of ceramic and has several diff erent shades of blue and green. In order to represent the movement of water within the pool, Robert used complimentary blues and greens together and slightly swirled them to make it look close to how water moves. Each piece of the pools water fits together like a tight puzzle. They are numbered so that the colors and shapes can be set together perfectly while on display. In the center of the pool, is a large white ceramic â€Å"splash†. Robert gave this piece curves and form to represent the splash of water as if someone was jumping into the pool and creating a huge backsplash. The edge of Roberts Pool with Splash is created to look like the cement barrier that contains the water of the pool. He formed each piece to look like a block which forms the shape of the lima bean pool. These parts of his masterpiece do not have the glazy appearance that the water pieces give. The Pool with Splash by Robert Arneson really shows and represents how a pool in someone’s backyard wo uld look on a hot summer day.
